Lejbus "Leon" Pelta

Pelta Family in Samarkand, Uzbekistan SSR c March 1945

Pelta Family Kinsk c 1932.

Lejbus "Leon" Pelta was born to Jankiel and Gitla Pelta on June 12,
1907 in Konskie (Kinsk) Poland. He had 3 sisters and 2 brothers:
Golda, Mania, Laja, Icek and David. See family portrait from Kinsk
dated c. 1930.

The parents, Jankiel and Gitla died in February and March 1937 in
Konskie at the ages of 65 and 68, respectively.

Grandpa's grandfather was Icek Pelta, who died in Kinsk in 1881. His
grandmother, Golda Mirla (Waxman), who married Icek in 1860 and died
in 1888 in Kinsk. She was from Gowarczow. Grandpa's step-grandmother
was Ester Frumeta who died in 1859.

Leon married Szyfra ("Shefka") Jurkewicz of Tomaszow Mazowiecki on
December 1939 in Baranowicz after escaping from German to Russian
occupied Poland. They were deported withother Polish refugees to
Sverdlovsk Oblast to work in a forced labor camp in early 1940 where
their daughter, Gitel Pelta was born in late 1940. She lived for 11
months and died of pneumonia due to Russian starvation of practically
everyone, including Shefka who was starving too much to be able to
feed the baby. She was buried in Andijon, Uzbekistan in the summer of
1941.

Leon and Shefka lived in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, USSR til early 1945,
where Leon worked as a master tailor for high-ranking Soviet
officials. Their son Jacob Berisz was born there on January 1, 1945.
See family portrait dated March 1945.

They moved to Dzalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan for a few months in 1945 with
Leon's sister-in-law, Sara Pelta, wife of his older brother Icek who
was serving in the British Army -- after joining the Polish Anders
Army upon release from the camp in Sverdlovsk.

After arriving in Poland in 1945, Leon went to the house at ul.
Pilsidskiego 42 in Kinsk in order to assess whether it was safe to
return with baby Jacob and his wife. However, he discovered a
competing non-Jewish Polish tailor, Mr. Majchrowicz, moved in with his
family, stole the tailor shop as well in the front of the property
that belonged to Grandpa and Majchrowicz was even renting out
additional rooms in the home because it was meant for Gpa's large
family, not for a small one, which the Majchrowicz's were at the time.
One of their daughter's still lives in the home, rents most of it out
to others to collect the rent. Mr Majchrowicz refused to let G-pa
remove any personal possessions, gave him some reams of our fabric and
then had a gang of Poles armed with axes chase G-pa out of Kinsk.
Some of our possessions are still in the home, our valuables were
discovered in a false wall in the basement in the 1970s by Mr
Majchrowicz. They refuse to speak with us.

In 1946, during the Kielce riots that swept Poland, G-pa was
threatened again in Lodz with losing his life. So he left Poland with
his wife and son along with most Polish survivors later that year for
Sweden, where he lived til 1951. His daughter Ester was born there in
1948. G-pa moved to the USA with the family in January 1951. They
settled in San Francisco, where he died on July 20, 1984 of a massive
heart attack on a Friday morning.

These events are verified, accurate and written by Lejbus Pelta's
grandson, Mordechai David Pelta who knew his grandfather well.
