#al49: Gar Alperovitz

(born 1936)
I received an email from a cousin of Gar;  Mike Posnick
mpoz@earthlink.net
....I am related to Dr. ALPEROVITZ through my mother's paternal
grandfather, Benjamin FRIEDMAN.  Benjamin FRIEDMAN was the brother of Dr.
ALPEROVITZ's paternal grandmother, whose Anglicized given name I know as
"Bessie."  Bessie was married to Eliyahu Ya'akov "Yankel"
ALPEROVITZ.  Benjamin FRIEDMAN and Bessie ALPEROVITZ were the children of
Mayshe FRIEDMAN and Khaya GORDIN.  It is my undertanding that the FRIEDMAN
and the ALPEROVITZ families lived in Dolginovo at the end of the 19th
Century and the beginning of the 20th Century.  I assume that the GORDIN
family also must have lived in or near Dolginovo during the same time period.;
Gar Alperovitz's   family first settled in Sheboygan when they migrated to
the United States.  They came to Sheboygan because my great-grandfather
(their maternal uncle), Benjamin Friedman, already was there.  The first to
come was Gar's grandfather's brother, Nokhim ALPEROVITZ (b. 1882,
Dolginovo), who arrived in November, 1907, on the S.S. Noordland through
the Port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Next came Gar's grandfather, Dovid
ALPEROVITZ (b. 1881, Dolginovo), who arrived in May, 1909, aboard the S.S.
Lake Michigan through the Port of Montreal, Quebec.  Last to come was
Dovid's brother, Shmuel ALPEROVITZ (b. 1887, Dolginovo), who arrived in
November, 1911, aboard the S.S. Rotterdam through the Port of New York, New
York, together with Nochim's wife, Khaya (nee RUBENSHTEYN) (b. 1882?), and
daughter, Relke (b. 1907).
This ALPEROVITZ family is often confused with another that also lived in
Sheboygan, but they are not related, as far as I know (the other family is
related to Joel Alpert, whose e-mail address is <jalpert@usa.net>).
By the early 1920's, Nochim ALPEROVITZ had moved from Sheboygan to
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dovid ALPEROVITZ had moved to Racine, Wisconsin, and
Shmuel ALPEROVITZ had moved to Rochester, New York.  The other ALPEROVITZ
family, which came from the Dokshitzy area, remained in Sheboygan.

#al53:.Herb Alpert was born in Los Angeles on March 31,1935.
The son of a Russian immigrant and a Hungarian mother, began playing the trumpet when he was eight. He studied classical music and his first trumpet teacher was Harold Mitchell.
Later on Herb joined the Army for two years as Solo Trumpeter with the Sixth Army band at Presidio in San Francisco, where he kept in practice the hard way, which included playing taps for as many as eighteen funerals a day.     Originally it was Herb's ambition to become a great jazzman; he admired the work of Miles Davis, Harry James, Clifford Brown, and others. So after his stint in the Army, he made his way into Hollywood studio work.     In the late fifties Herb Alpert made his way into different areas of the entertainment industry. One area was his motion picture work, which Herb always regarded as a plateau on the way to the musical top, Herb would often wound up on the trumpet or the drums, as in the "Ten Commandments", he played the drums in the scene where Moses comes down the mountain. And Herb was seen and heard playing trumpet in the movies "Love Me Or Leave Me" and "Say One For Me".     Another area Herb got into was teaming up with Lou Adler (who, like himself, later became a record company executive), becoming a songwriter and a A&R man with a small independent record company called Keen Records. He helped in composing several songs, including the hit "Wonderful World" recorded by the late Sam Cooke.Alpert and Adler also worked on Jan & Dean hits like "Baby Talk" for Dore Records and with soul singer Lou Rawls they set up their own Shardee record label.     Jerry Moss was the top independent record promotion man in the country when he and Herb Alpert first met in the early sixties.Moss had produced the two vocal recordings Herb had made for Dore Records.Herb and Jerry formed a new record company then called Carnival Records, soon changed to A&M (Alpert and Moss).     With the popularity of the Tijuana Brass, came a public demand for personal appearances, because fans want to see their artists in person. While the first few Brass recordings were made by studio musicians assembled to play Alpert's own unique arrangements, it soon became evident that a permanent group called "The Tijuana Brass" would have to be the obvious outcome of record fame.     In June of 1963, Herb assembled a group to appear at the now defunct Crescendo Club in Hollywood. But it wasn't until two years later that a live, inperson Tijuana Brass was organized on a steady basis.     In 1965, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss hand-picked a group of top-rate musicians with personalities to match their musical talent, and the first time they appeared together in public on stage, they literally "ran away with the show".
From 1965 to 1968, the Tijuana Brass had earned 11 gold albums, including five that reached Number One on the charts. In April of 1966 four of their first five albums were listed in the top 10 at the same time, a feat that has never been equaled. And in 1966, they held down the Number One spot on Billboards pop album chart for 18 weeks, longer than any other act, and was arguably the hottest act in pop music.     After 1968 things slowed down for the Tijuana Brass. They earned their 13th-and-last gold album in 1971.In the mid-'70's Herb reorganized the Brass after some of the original members left, but the response from the public was disappointing, and the group subsequently disbanded. But Herb Alpert started a solo career which gave him new direction. In 1978 he released two jazz oriented albums with trumpeter Hugh Masekela, known for his hit "Grazin' In The Grass".In 1979 he released "Rise", an instrumental that won him a Grammy award that year.     In 1984  he went on tour with a new group he organized to be the Tijuana Brass promoting his album "Bullish".Bob Edmondson, Nick Ceroli and John Pisano, along with Julius Wechter was part of that group. But after the tour he still remained a solo act.And in 1987 he released "Diamonds" with guest vocalist Janet Jackson.     In June of 1989, Alpert and Moss sold A&M Records to PolyGram Corporation for close to a half a billion dollars. Not bad for a company that started 27 years earlier in Alpert's garage. They kept Rondor the publishing arm of A&M and stayed on managing A&M until June of 1993.Then they left to start a small record label called Almo Sounds.     Herb Alpert, today,is still in the mainstream of pop music, having put out over four decades of great music.                                                      Wendell Johnson

Herb Alpert was born on 31 March 1935 in Los Angeles, CA. His parents were of Russian Jewish (father ) and Hungarian (mother) stock and gave him a Trumpet on his 8th Birthday. He at first hated to practice day after day but eventually grew to love it by his teen years. His father who was a Russian Jew from Kiev, was a clothes designer in Chicago and became so good at it he moved to Los Angeles, CA. They wanted Herbie who was the oldest of the 3 kids to join his father in the tailor business we graduated. The family began to play instruments together as a group and Herb on trumpet was joined by his mother on violin, his dad on mandolin, his brother on drums and his sister on piano. He graduated Fairfax High School in Los Angeles in 1955 but was soon to be drafted into the Army. He played trumpet with the 6th Army Band in Presidio in San Francisco, CA. He played the trumpet quite often during his two years in the service at parades, concerts and funerals.
After he was honorably discharged from the Army he returned home to attend college at U.C.L.A. but dropped out after only 2 semesters. He had decided he wanted to become a star in pictures and went to Hollywood where he had a bit part in “The Ten Commandments but only his back was seen. In 1957 he signed a contract with a local recording company called “Keen records that was a subsidiary of “RCA. The label had only one big star singed on its label at that time by the name of “Sam Cooke. Herb and “Lou Adler were asked to write new material for Sam and wrote 3 hit singles for him up until 1959. RCA was so impressed with Herb & Lou that they were asked to develop new talent for a new subsidiary label of theirs named “Dore records. Herb also released his very first single under the name of the “Herbie Alpert Sextet titled “Hully Gully on “Andex Records. This was followed by “Sweet Georgia Brown on “Carol Records. Both records are said to be very, very scarce and highly collectable. Lou sang with Herb on his next single under the name of “Herb B. Lou for a single titled “The Trial on “Arch Records.
Herb help produce songs for a group called “Dante & The Evergreens and for “Jan & Dean. The first big hit produced by Herb for “Jan & Dean was “Baby Talk on “Dore that went Top 10 in 1959. He next produced a Top 10 hit for “Sam Cooke also in 1959 titled “Wonderful World. In 1960 they produced one big hit for “Dante & The Evergreens titled “Alley Oop but would become a bigger hit later on for the "Hollywood Argyles. Herb continued to record and release singles in 1961 but none were showed any potential. In 1962 Herb met “Jerry Moss an independent record producer and using their own money they started their own record label. The label was called “Carnival Records in March 1962 but they found out that there was already a label with that name and quickly changed it to “A & M Records. The decided on “A & M based on the first initial of their last names. They set up a small recording studio in Herb’s own garage and he would record demo tapes that they would shop around to the major labels. He recorded his next single under the name of “Dore Alpert titled “Tell It To The Birds that was released on their “Carnival record label before they renamed it. It became a minor hit in Los Angeles in 1962. He began work on his next single titled “Twinkle Star and after 4 hours or recording they decided to go down to Tijuana. They took in the bullfights and based on the crowd noise decided he would add mariachi, trumpets, drums and mandolins and the sound of the crowd noise that they had recorded while there. Herb and Jerry decided that the studio musicians that were playing the background music needed a name and dubbed them the “Tijuana Brass.

LOUIS ALPERT AND TILLIE GOLDBERG'S first date was the Fireman's Ball at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles in January 1925, and they were married that June as Ben Bernies rendition of "Sweet Georgia Brown" was the most popular song in America. Louis was the Russian-born manufacturer of an exclusive line of ladies' apparel, and Tillie was a bookkeeper in the Whitehouse, a downtown department store. Louis brought his family to Chicago in the 1900s from a little village near Kiev, Russia, while Tillie's parents had emigrated from Romania.
The Alpert's second son, Herb, was delivered at midday on March 31, 1935 at Cedars of Lebanon on Fountain Avenue. "My doctor was a Seventh-Day Adventist, a very religious man," remembers Tillie Alpert with a laugh, "And he had to run off to church as soon as the baby was born." The Alperts (including first boy David and daughter Mimi) were a happy, close-knit family that resided in a roomy Spanish-Mediterranean stucco house on Fuller Street in Los Angeles. Each summer on their wedding anniversary, the parents took their tots to Catalina Island for a vacation. As the kids grew, they were also treated to annual August trips to the Highland Springs resort in Beaumont, California, for horse-back riding, hiking and hayrides. At home, music was the primary source of recreation Mr. Alpert was proficient on the mandolin and in her childhood his wife had received training on the violin. While older brother David showed a flair for the drums, Herb demonstrated no interest in music until the age of eight. "My husband and I had gone away for the weekend to a place called Murietta Hot Springs," says Tillie Alpert, "and when we got home there was a horn in the house. We asked the children where it came from and Herb said, 'I rented it from school with my allowance,' I asked him how long he was allowed to keep it, and he said six months." The horn was a Rudy Muck trumpet, leased from Mrs. Balo's music-appreciation class at Melrose Avenue School. Eager to encourage the boy, Mrs. Alpert arranged for an Italian teacher, a Mr. Mariano, to take Herb on. "But he wouldn't practice much," she says; he focused instead on athletics.
(This Special Article is courtesy of Doug McCoy)
Herb had a wife and a baby son Dore to consider (with a daughter, Eden, to come), so he took work as an athletics instructor, and decided to try acting at the suggestion of a Hollywood producer who worked out at his gym. He was sent to a Paramount casting director for a "fishbowl screen test," reading for a minor part in Cecil B. DeMille's biblical epic, The Ten Commandments
Jazz musician Herb Alpert was once asked why he had named his son 'Dore'. The name, Alpert explained, contains the first two notes of the musical scale - do and re.

GEORGE ALPERT born; 24 Mar 1898 died; 11 Sep 1988 Last Residence;

a lawyer, financier and philanthropist, was president of the New Haven Railroad and helped found Brandeis University.

William Alpert Age;6 BirthYear;1923 Son Boston, Suffolk, MA
Leonard Alpert Age;3 BirthYear;1926 Son Boston, Suffolk, MA Ram Dass was born, Richard Alpert, on April 6, 1931 in Boston, Mass., the son of a wealthy lawyer George Alpert who was the president of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad and founder of Brandeis University. As Richard Alpert he received a B.A. from Tufts College in 1952, an M.A. in motivation psychology from Wesleyan University in 1953, and a Ph.D. in human development from Stanford University in 1957. He was an instructor at Stanford from 1957-58. He taught and conducted research at the Department of Social Relations and the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University from 1958 to 1963.
While at Harvard, his explorations of human consciousness led him to conduct intensive research with LSD and other psychedelic elements, in collaboration with Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, and others. Because of the controversial nature of this research, Ram Dass and Leary were dismissed from Harvard in 1963.
In 1967, he traveled to India where he met his spiritual teacher, Neem Karoli Baba (there is a beautiful picture of Maharaj-ji here. Here he was given the name Ram Dass (Servant of God). While in India and after his return to North America he has studied yoga and meditation and a variety of spiritual practices, including Hinduism, karma, yoga and Sufism.
In 1974, Ram Dass created the Hanuman Foundation, which has developed many projects, including the Prison-Ashram Project, designed to help inmates grow spiritually during incarceration. He also helped develop the "Living/Dying Project", with Stephen Levine which provides support for the conscious dying.
In 1978 Ram Dass co-founded and became a board member of the Seva Foundation, an international organization dedicated to relieving suffering in the world. Seva supports programs designed to help wipe out curable blindness in India and Nepal, restore the agricultural life of impoverished villagers in Guatemala, assist in primary health care for American Indians, and to bring attention to the issues of homelessness and environmental degradation in the United States, among others. There is a Canadian Seva Service Society which is active in the same areas of service.
On 19 February 1997, Ram Dass suffered a stroke which left him paralyzed on the right side of his body and limited his ability to speak. For more information, go to the Ram Dass Tapes web site and click on "News" under the "Ram Dass" heading. A Community Satsang page can also be found by going to the Ram Dass Tapes web site and clicking on the "Message Board" heading.
To read one of the first media reports of his stroke check out this article at the San Fransisco Examiner on February 26, 1997.
On Monday, May 26, 1997 Ram Dass gave his first interview to Don Lattin, Chronicle Religion Writer, (San Fransisco Chronicle) since his stroke. In this interview titled "Stroke Teaches Ram Dass Anew to `Be Here Now': Spiritual teacher slowly recovering" we can hear Ram Dass' struggle to communicate with words since his stroke. We can also, however, experience some of the "eloquence to silence" which has become a tool for Ram Dass since his stroke.
On March 11th, 1998 Ram Dass gave his first public lecture since his stroke. He was invited to speak at Don Holmlund's class on "America in the '60s" at the College of Marin. Ram Dass spoke about the many ways psychedelics had shaped the social and spiritual values of a generation, and he told stories of the Harvard psychedelic experiments and of his adventures with Tim Leary.
Ram Dass has begun to travel and offer satsang again. If you go to the Ram Dass Tapes web site and check out "Ram Dass - Schedule & Lectures" you will find his teaching schedule.
Ram Dass has written a number of books on spiritual topics. The Ram Dass Tape Library offers copies of those books, as well as tapes and videos of his talks, for sale. As someone who has used the books and tapes extensively I highly recommend them to you.

 Notes to and from Judy Wolkovitch;
Dear Judy,
My great grandmother was also a member of the Alperovich family.
You asked; Can anyone tell me if records from Dunilovichi are
available?
Specifically,
> I have received a marriage record from Belgium which states that the
bride,
Nechama Alperovich was born in Dunilovichi in 1883.
Dunilovichi is today in Belarus, was in the Vilna gubernia in 1883.
for pictures, lists, Yizkor book , revision list for 1850 go to;
http://www.eilatgordinlevitan.com/dunilovichi/dunilovichi.html
You will not find muchy Alperovitzes in the 1850 revision list for
Dunilovichi ( one family only). They were all registered in the near
by shtetl; Kurenets
http://www.eilatgordinlevitan.com/kurenets/kurenets.html. The name
Alperovich/ tz originated in Kurenets. About a third of the town took
that last name c 1810. For pictures and information about the family;
http://www.eilatgordinlevitan.com/kurenets/k_pages/alperovitz.html
I would like very much to add pictures of your family to the site

Eilat Gordin Levitan
Los Angeles
Thank you very much indeed for the information. Apparently Nechama
Alperovich was a descendant of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Lyady. This may
have
been a apocryphal but her husband was a wise man and I think he knew
what he
was saying. In fact, my late husband, Nechama's grandson, was named
Schneur
Zalman. I am trying to find the names of Necham's sisters because they
went
to Philadelphia in the late 1800's and as I am not sure of their names
I
have not been able to trace them though I have a photo of one of their
children. I do not have a picture of Nechama but will try to get one
from
her daughter who lives in England......
Dear Judy,
Nechama Alperovich being a descendant of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of
Lyady is very much in the spirit of the town of Kurenets which had
strong family ties with the leaders of early Chasids and Chabad. Read
the story of Rabbi Landau in the Yizkor book of Kurenets. There was
also a Schneurson family in Kurenets which was related to the Chabad
family ( see picture on the Kurenets page). They lived in Kurenets
before the war and were well of and highly connected. They owned a
pharmecy and the were not killed with the rest of the Jews on 9- 9-
1942 because they were needed. For months they helped Jews who
escaped the killings and were hiding in the forest. They also helped
the underground. They were ready to escape to the forest many times
but asked to stay ( by the underground ) for a little longer). They
did what they were asked to do and eventuly the Germans killed them. I
heard from my mothers' first cousin ( his name is also Schneur Zalman
- or today Zalman Uri Gurevitz) who was a partisan, that one of the
sons escaped and survived. Love to have for the site and the tiny
museum in Kurenets any picture you have.
Dear Eilat,

I have learnt more from your three e-mails that I have in the past ten
years
regarding the background to the Alperovich family. I am most grateful
for
the information.

I would like to give you the little information I have in the hope that
one
day it will tie in with someone else's. Nechamah was the daughter of
Schneur Zalman Alperovich who died around 1892 and Rifka nee Feldman
who
died around 1908. Rifka was a single daughter with about four brothers
and
the family owned a flour mill. Nechama had three or four sisters who
went
to Philadelphia and they must have married. One of the husbands was
apparently killed in a flooding of the Ohio river. There was a
granddaughter named Jean Stellar (sp?).

Judy
Dear Judy,
Arthur Wouks' mother ;Sarah Wouk, nee Feldman ( she was first cousin
of the mother of the writer ;Herman Wouk. Her husband was the brother
of his father.) They came from the Kurenets area. She might have been a
cousin of your Rifka Feldman.
Arthur sent me a picture;
In the first row - left to right:standing - Sarah Wouk, nee Feldman,
my mother. seated: - Faiga Racha Feldman, nee Levine, her mother, and
the eldest of the Levine children; Rabbi Mend Leib was her younger
brother. standing - Sadie Podolnick, nee Feldman, my mother's older
sister. behind, standing, are two men, thought to be cousins of Sarah
and Sadie. this picture was taken in 1934, when the two sisters
visited their mother who was not well. however, she lived on till
1942. it was taken in either Kurenitz or Budonovah. Anyone having any
information about Faiga Racha or the two men, please send it to me.
Arthur Wouk for the picture;
http://www.eilatgordinlevitan.com/kurenets/k_pix/scenes_old/so82_1_big.jpg
from the Kurenets Yizkor book; During the last two years, we had two
rabbis, Rabbi Moshe Aharon Feldman, Z"L, a dear man and a gentle soul,
and Rabbi Shlomo Elie Oshpal, Z"L. ........
Days and events that happened do not exist anymore… Everything was
erased. Rabbi Feldman, Z"L, was martyred and died a torturous death in
Kurenets.....
When we walked near the house Paikon, we saw that in a puddle of blood
lay the body of the rabbi's widow (Moshe Aron Feldman's wife)......
I found reports from yad vashem for him; Feldman Moshe
Moshe Aharon Feldman was born in Olsan, Poland ( not far from
Kurenets and Dunilovichi) in 1880. He was a rabbi and married. Prior
to WWII he lived in Kurenets, Poland. During the war was in Kurenets,
Poland. Moshe perished in 1942 in Kurenets, Poland. This information
is based on a Page of Testimony submitted on 10/12/1956 by his
acquaintance Dov Benes.
I received the email from Arthur Wouk of Colorado about 5 years ago
but still you should write him,
All the best,

Eilat

Judy Wolkovitch to me
show details 4/19/06

Dear Eilat,

This gets more and more interesting. I was never certain of Nechama's
siblings names but one was defintely Faiga Raiza. I saw the name Faiga
Racha and wondered about a possible connection. The other names were
possibly Esther and Sarah. There was definitely a young brother named
Avram
who remained in Lithuania. I will ask Nechama's daughter who lives in
England if she recognizes any of the other names. The daughter, my
aunt by
marriage, is named Rene (Raina Mariam) and she is in her 80's. She has
a
marvellous memory although her health is failing. Nechamah used to
write to
her sisters in Philadelphia but when Nechama died the contact was lost.
I
believe that one sister returned home after she became a widow.
One sister may have gone to Birobidjan.
Thank you for following up on this.
Judy

Dear Eilat,

Just a note to let you know that my e-mail to Arthur Wouk bounced so I
called him and there may well be a connection. He told my that Faiga
Racha's husband Aron Feldman was a miller and this matches the
information
that I have about Rifka Feldman and that her family had a flour mill.
I
will keep you informed as to any progress we make and again thank you
very
much for taking the time to help.

Kind regards,

Judy Wolkovitch

Message: hello
I wonder if you can help me?
My family name in England is Alperovitch. I do not know if this has been spelt
incorrectly because of maybe a language barrier?
I have been told that a David or Davis Alperovitch came from Kiev and his wife
Rachel Milchenson came from Minsk. I do not know this for sure. I think they
left Russia to come to England at the end of the 1800's. Their marriage is
recorded in England 1899.
Is this any relation to the alperovich or alperovitz please?

You have saved this record to My Ancestry (Shoebox).
