The Destruction of Volozhin
By Mendel Volkovitsh, Nataniya
English in Volozhin Yizkor Book (page 30 from left side)
The Germans entered Volozhyn on month Tammuz 1st, year 5701  (July 25th
1941), three days after crossing the Soviet borders. Arriving in town they
committed a small-scale massacre of Jews. The nazi invaders murdered Alter
Berman, Pessah Mazeh, Eliyahu Perski and Alter Shimshelevitsh.
In the Av month (August 1941) the Ghetto was established. It was situated
between the Curved Street (Krumme Gass), Dubinski Street, Minsk Street and
the Volozhynka River. Around 3500 people were crowded in a few dozens of
houses.
The Ghetto life became harder from day to day. SS men intruded once into
the house that served for praying. They took a Torah Scroll, spread it out
on the floor, made several dozens of Jews lie down on the sheets and
killed them.
The 23rd Iyar 5702 (10th may 1942) marked the day of the Volozhyn
Community destruction.
At 5 a.m. in the morning of May 10th 1942 SS men, assisted by Polish and
by Belarus policemen have surrounded the Ghetto. They shot at any Jew on
their way. Many fell dead. They drew the people into the Soviet smith
shop, on Mostsitski Street, near the aroptsu-synagogue. The victims had
been enclosed in that building. Outside the murderers placed chairs. They
set out a table with food, vodka and liquor. Around sat policemen and SS
men, bright and cheerful, with guns and machineguns in hand. Between the
drinks they shot in the building to silence the children weeping and the
adults screams.
Among the enclosed Jews was Rabbi Reuven Hadash, the Rabbi from Olshan. He
called the victims not to go like sheeps to slaughter. He told them to
destroy the ovens, to take in hand a brick a stone or an iron bar, to
break down the door and to attack the murderers. But Rabbi Israel Lunin
opposed him saying that: Even when a sharp sword is pressed against ones
throat dont let him to interrupt his hope for mercy.
The victims started to run breaking out through the roof. The murderers
shot on them from all guns, but still a few succeeded to escape. Among
them were Motl Mlot and Leyzer Meltser.
The murderers lead the victims out in groups. Some elderly Jews did their
last way enwrapped in prayer shawls and adorned by holy phylacteries. The
Jews were conducted purposely through the gentiles streets in order to
allow the locals enjoy the Jewish terminal fall. Young men and women get
out into the streets playing on organs, dancing and singing joyful songs.
The blood thirsty anti Semites gathered around, they teased and mocked the
going to death.
The sentenced to death were put into Bulavas house next to the eastern
fence of the ancient Jewish graveyard. Here the assassins killed them with
automatic weapons. After the slaughter they set the house on fire. The
Volozhin Jews went up to heaven in flames. On that day many other Jews
were killed, being shot on attics, cellars and other hiding places. When
these corpses were taken to burial into common graves, the local gentiles
flung on the dead human bodies dead cats, dead dogs and all kinds of
rubbish.
After the slaughter the gentiles entered the Ghetto with horses and carts.
They looted whatever they could.
With the sun setting we left our refuge inside the barn and crept towards
our house. The doors were wide open. Is there anybody here? we asked in a
whisper and we heard a whisper answering: I am here. It was my brother in
law Hershl Perski, afterwards we heard the calls of Hershl and Tziviya
Lunin. Under the darkness cover we set out to the forest.

Rabbi Isroel Lunin
By Shulamit Goloventshits
Translated by M. Porat. - Vol.Y. Book, page 493Isroel Lunin arrived in Volozhin in the year 1910. He came to study at the Yeshiva
Eyts Hayim that was headed at that time by Rabbi Refoel Shapiro. He married a native girl; Sheyne Berger, daughter of Feytshe and Tsvi-Hirsh. After their marriage he established a commerce of leathers and linen in partnership with Itshe Meyer Berman and Lipe Levin. The linen was transported by railroad to Vilna. The business
flourished after a short time.
R' Isroel adopted himself to the social life of Volozhin. He was elected as gabay  manager of the Klayzl  Small synagogue. He devoted much of his time to aid and assistance of the poor and to the economic development of the town. He was amongst the founders of the public Bank; Yiddish Folks Bank.
He became its first director. The bank assisted Volozhin craftsmen-and businessmen. Isroel was also among the founders of the self-defense group during the First World War and was an active participant in its activities.
R' Isroel was concerned about the Yeshiva building. He examined and rebuild it
after the war caused much damages to the building. He became very busy with writing letters to Volozhin descendants in the States in which he asked for their assistance in the rebuilding of the Yeshiva. The founds soon arrived and the Yeshiva was reconditioned.
He worried also about other dwelling conditions and economical aid for the
Yeshiva students.
Reb Isroel Lunin was much honored by the Volozhin inhabitants. It may be
demonstrated by the following event. Volozhin had a dozen of
horse-harnessed-cart drivers (Baleygoles). Their main work consisted of
driving passengers from the town to the rail station. One day Hayim Meyer
Yeshaye bought a bus to transport the passengers. The cart drivers
worried for their Parnosse bread yearning,  they turned to Reb Isroel for help.
Isroel had a strong desire that he must assist the Baleygoles immediately. He
suggested to Hayim Meyer to organize cooperation with the cart drivers. Hayim
Meyer adopted Reb Isroel Lunin's suggestion. The poor cart drivers
Parnosse was saved.
Isroel Lunin was elected as head of the Volozhin Kehila (congregation)
soon after the Polish rule was established (early 1920s). He adopted himself to the new spirits of the more modern times. He assisted in the founding of the Hebrew Tarbut School.
Lunin became an ardent Zionist. I remember Grabovski's arriving from Vilna
to collect donations for Keren Hayisod. He called an assembly in the
Klayzl. The response was very weak. Lunin decided to make another effort to reach the Volozhiners. Together with Shlomo Hayim Brudno and Yani Garber they did a lot of Zionist publicity. The effect was big. At the following visit of Mr. Grabovski a
considerable amount of money and valuebale objects were collected for
Keren Hayessod.
The final fate of the Volozhin Jews was also Isroel Lunin's and his family
fate. They were murdered and burnt with his beloved shtetl congregation on
May 1942 Volozhin.

We did not succed to obtain R' Isroel Lunin's picture. We present there a
picture of his family: Standing from right to left: Alter Shimshelevitsh

brother in law, deceased in Israel).

Tsvi  Hirshl Lunin
By Hessl Perski
Translated by M. Porat - Vol.Y. Book, page 590

Tsvi was born in Volozhin in 1921. He was the son of Isroel and Sheyna Lunin. He ran away from the Volozhin Ghetto. But was caught by the Germans and brought to Ghetto Krasne. There he worked some time and succeeded to secretly buy a rifle. He ran away once more, this time to the partisans. Hirshl joined the unit named Staritski. He was entrusted with the dangerous duty to follow German movements and to mine their
vehicles.
Hirshl with other members of his Partisan unit penetrated into Ivianits. He fought a bloody battle against the garrison and drove the Germans away from the shtetl.
Once he was sent with a partisan group to accomplish sabotage acts in the
Nalibok forest near Volozhin. The detachment stumbled across a German
ambush. During the fight all the partisans were killed. Hirsh was the sole
survivor. He defended himself until the last bullet. In his last fight he was
severely wounded. Tsvi-Hirsh Lunin passed away on March 8, 1943.

In a message dated 2/11/03 7:51:57 PM Pacific Standard Time, rimalunin@ameritech.net writes:am the granddaughter of Carl Lunin whose

Dear Rima, I was very happy to receive your note.   I created the family site to find relatives of the Lunin family who perished in Volozhin during the war. Rabbi Israel Lunin perished with his wife and children; Nechama, Zvia, Gershon and Zvi. Picture;

Viktor Lunin first became known to Russian children’s literature through his witty verses, in which he gave shape to moods or ideas, without tackling any particual subject. Interestingly enough, he takes the same approach in his prose. He reduces the plot to a minimum, sketches out moods and shapes of plot. In thisfairy tale the master pastry maker Cream makes a cat, the gingerbread Liza, come to life. She jumps through the window and wanders through town and countryside. In her many adventures she still remains a creature made of dough. With her new friend, tom-cat Valerian on the track of mice, she accidentally returns to the shop of the pastry maker, who has been given a basket of mice by an
ill-willed relative. Liza and Valerian free Cream from this nuisance. The story shows many parallels to folk-tales and is told typically for Lunin, in a lively, child-oriented narrative. (6+)
