Albert Meltzer, who has died aged 76, was a torchbearer for the international
anarchist movement. A lifelong trade unionist he fought Mosley's blackshirts; actively
supported the Spanish revolution's anarchist communes and militias and the German anti-Nazi resistance and was a key player in the second world war Cairo mutiny. Postwar he helped rebuild Spain's anti-Franco resistance and the international anarchist movement, founded the Anarchist Black Cross, the subsequent paper Black Flag.and the Kate Sharpley Library. He remained active until his death.Albert's decision, aged 15, to go into revolutionary politics resulted, he claimed,
from boxing lessons. The streetwise but bookish schoolboy attended his first meeting in 1935 - where he defended boxing against Emma Goldman. He became a dynamic participant at meetings. The anarchist-led resistance to the 1936 Franco uprising in Spain boosted British
anarchism. Albert helped organise arms shipments from Hamburg to Spain and acted as a contact for the Spanish anarchist intelligence service.
His early career was as a fairground promoter, theatre hand and occasional film
extra. Later Albert was a secondhand bookseller and finally, a Fleet Street copytaker - for the Daily Telegraph.
While a gentle, generous and gracious soul, his championship of anarchism as a
revolutionary working class movement led to conflict with the neo-liberals who
dominated the movement in the late 1940s. Albert was vehemently opposed to the repackaging of anarchism as a broad church for academia orientated quietists and single-issue pressure groups. It was his championship of the class struggle, coupled with his scepticism about the student led New Left in the 1960s, which earned Albert his reputation for sectarianism.
Paradoxically, as friend and Black Flag cartoonist Phil Ruff points out in his
introduction to Albert's autobiography "I Couldn't Paint Golden Angels", it was the very discovery of class struggle anarchism through the so-called sectarianism of Black Flag that convinced many anarchists of his and subsequent generations to become active. It brought countless young people in many countries into the anarchist movement then and for a further 30 years.
Albert will be fondly remembered by those of us whose lives he touched.
Albert Meltzer, anarchist, born January 7th 1920; died May 7th 1996.
Alberts funeral will be on Fiday May 24th, 12 noon at Lewisham Crematorium.

Hi,
I am Paula Adelman and my grandfather Morris Meltzer (my mother was
Eunice Meltzer Brill) was born in Moledechna where his father, Yehuda
Leib Metlzer was the Rabbi in the late 1800's to early 1900's.
I have many more pictures and I would be happy to send more if you
would like. The gravestone is taken in the cemetery of Moledechna
which no longer exists (I was recently there looking for it). I have
the whole family history and discovered a lot of my long lost family
due to this website. Thank you so much for compiling this. I have
some recent photos from the museum in Moledechna too.

Take care and look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Paula Adelman

-- I have hit a dead end with my ancestors in Lithuania. Three Meltzer
brothers immigrated to the United States in the mid-1880's: Samuel James
(b. 1851), Joshua (b. 1864) and Mark Charles (b. 1866, my g-grandfather).
All went on to illustrious careers in the US, so there is ample information
about them, but I have only various names of their parents and some towns
where they lived.

Records for Samuel and Mark say they were born in Traupis, but other
records say they lived in Panevezys. Although these towns are near each
other, they are in different research districts, so I don't know which I
should choose to invest in - I can't really afford the $200 to join both
research districts. Their father was a rabbi; I have seen both Simon and
Victor for his first name. Their mother's name was, variously, Theresa,
Esther or Taube and one record gives her the surname Kowars. I estimate
about 1825 for their date of birth.

I have searched the ALD for Meltzer and Kowars in both Traupis and
Panevezys without finding any records for the father and mother. Can anyone
advise me on where to focus my search for records from the mid-19th century?

Liz McCane

I am trying to confirm my family ties to Volozhin.  My ggf, Lazer
Shmuliov Sklut-MELZER (b1871) came to America in 1910.  His passport
referred to him as a Volozhin city dweller.  His brother, Aron MELZER
(b1874) came to America in 1904.  Their father's name was Shmuel
Yakov.  But I cannot seem to find any other information regarding
their marriages or births or existence in Volozhin.  I assume there is
a relation to the Sklut family as well, but I don't really understand
the hyphenated name as shown on his passport.  I would appreciate any
education, recommendations or suggestions that can help me identify
the relationship to the Sklut family or their birth or marriage or
parents records.

Thank you.
Eddie Meltzer, Kansas City

I was so happy to find your site. I have been trying to research the
Meltzer family from Dvinsk as we will be visiting Latvia next summer.
I had researched in 1996 for a family reunion but couldn't get past my
paternal grandparents.

My grandfather was Kadish Meltzer who married Basha Minna Stork(?)
from Courland. They had six surviving children, five sons and one
daughter. My father Albert Samuel, Avrum Tshimon, was born around
1896. They all immigrated at various times around 1910-1915. Some to
New York and some to Rochester N.Y. and some to Cleveland Oh.

If you could help me by telling me how to research or have any
information, I would be deeply appreciative. We are taking grandson
#4 (we have 6) on his Bar Mitzvah journey and it would be wonderful to
share some history with him and the other 5 grandsons!

I believe I am related to the family of Alexander Meltzer who was listed in the 1930 Census as living in New Jersey. In 1930 he was listed as being 55 years old and his wife was named Rose, who was listed as being 47 years old. His children were Lawrence (25), Leo (22), Moe (20), Esther (17), Samuel (10) and Sidney (8). Alexander's occupation was listed as a Painter in the census.
I believe Alexander was the brother to my great grandfather, Lewis (Lazer) Schmuliov Sklut-Meltzer (Melzer). Lewis was born in Volozhyn. Lewis's wife was Chia (Ida) Botwinik. Ida was from Rakov. If there is any connection, or other knowledge, please let me know. Surnames: Meltzer, Melzer, Botwinik, Sklut

Dear Eilat Levitan,

I just sent this. Perhaps you can answer my question about wether I am related to Michael Coriander.

Subject: Bunimowitz relation? Bayonne?

Dear Michael Coriander,

I found your message on the internet:

Bunimowitz
Author: Michael Courlander Date: 1 Feb 2001 9:57 AM GMT Looking for info on Rosa (Rose) Bunimowitz (Bunim or Bunimovitz) who married my ggf, Jacob Meltzer (from Voluzhin) probably in the 1880s. They lived either in NYC or Bayonne, NJ.

Irving Bunim (Shortened from Bunimowitz) was my father's first cousin. His parents were Moses & Minna Bunimowitz. Moses' father was Sh'-mar-yau-hu.

Sh'maryahu's children: Dora -Dabrushka, Moses -Moshe, Yoel, Mordecai Aaron (He changed his last name to Benjamin.)

Dora was married to Chaim B. Bernstein (was Miashnik). (Both came to the US from Volozhin, Belarus, Russia.) They had a bakery in Manhattan, New York (as recorded on the 1910 & 1920 US census).
Dora & Chaim's second child was Ida -Chaya Sau-rau. Ida was married to Dr. Abraham Ossip (from Rokiskis, Lithuania, Russia).

Ida & Abraham Ossip were my grandparents.

I have located the ship manifests for Chaim & Dora, and their children. They came to the US on 3 ships.

I located what probably is the ship manifest for Moses Bunimowitz. On it he is recorded as: Moische Bunimovitz from Wolozin, Russia. His wife in the old country: Mine. Passage was paid by Uncle. He was going to: Uncle J. Meltzer, Bayonne NY 77 W2.

If this ship manifest is for my grandmother's (Ida's) uncle, Moses, then I am wondering if the mentioned Uncle J. Meltzer is the Jacob Meltzer in your message. If yes, then (assuming he wasn't a great uncle) his wife, Rosa, was a sister to Sh'maryahu. And that would make us cousins! Rosa being your great grandmother, and Sh'maryahu being my great great grandfather.

Please let me know if (& how) you can confirm a connection.

Looking forward to your reply,
Kenneth Ossip

PS: I compiled a chart of Sh'maryahu's descendants in 1987. I have copies of the 1920 & 1930 US census records on Moses Bunimowitz, as well as the 1910 & 1920 records on Dora (Bunimowitz) Bernstein.

This caught my eye as I was searching your web site
6. John Abramson born 1909 died 1992 in Portland, Maine married Ada Meltzer (sons; Irving Joel Abromson and Morton Colp Abromson)

I. Joel Abromson's wife is Linda.  We're VERY close.  Joel died c. 2002.

Whenever I search for the name Saretsky/Zaretsky.........you turn up!

I have a copy of my great grandfather's Russian passport.  I have the
number, 2512.  He received a stamp to leave abroad in June 1910.  I
want to use this information and other information in his passport to
find out more about him and where he might be from and the rest of my
Meltzer relations.  His name is Laser Shmuliov Sklut-MELTZER and the
passport says he is a Volozhin city dweller.  His passport gives the
names of his wife and children and their birth dates.

The citations are from the "records about Jews born in Vilno City" and
there is also language stating that "This certificate is issued for
including into the family directory of Vilno City, March 22nd, 1906
and there is an official Rabbi of Vilno City's signature.  I would
appreciate any help whatsoever pointing me in the right direction to
obtain more information and or someone experienced enough to help me
find more information.

Thank you.
