Dr. David Rier, Chairman of the Graduate Program in Medical Sociology
in the
Sociology and Anthropology Dept., is the recipient of the Eliot
Freidson
Award given by the Medical Sociological Association (of the American
Sociological Association). The prestigious prize is granted every two
years
for the book or article which has the greatest impact in medical
sociology in
the last two years. Dr. Rier received the prize for his article "The Missing Voice of the
Critically Ill: A Medical Sociologist's First Person Account" written
in the
British journal Sociology of Health and Illness, January 2000. Dr. Rier
based
his article on his own first hand experience as a critically ill
patient six
years ago. His personal experience led him to revive the 1950's
theories of
then noted sociologist Talcott Parsons. Parsons had advocated the
authoritative doctor-patient relationship – a notion that has lost
favor in
medical sociological circles in recent years.
Nowadays patients are encouraged to take more charge of their illness,
to
educate themselves via the Internet and other means in order to be an
effective "member" of the medical team tackling the illness. In writing
about
his own life-threatening illness and his relationship with the medical
staff,
Dr. Rier overturned current scientific thought, claiming that although
this
mode of thought might be helpful in terms of chronic illness (breast
cancer,
AIDS), in life-threatening illness the equations are entirely
different.
Steven T. Rier
Research Interests:
Carbon dynamics in stream ecosystems, the role of microbial food webs
in
aquatic systems, the effects of elevated CO2 on detrital food webs, and
algal-bacterial interactions in streams.

James E. Rier currently lives in his hometown of Machias. He
continues to
be an active community member participating to develop areas that can
help
to ensure the survival of a small town where the primary income is
derived
from the and economy where many residents harvest the ocean's bounty
for a
living. Jim's caring and deep concern for students and their learning
environment has given him an opportunity to improve to actively
participate
through his commitment as a member of the School Construction
Subcommittee.
This committee has worked extremely hard over the last few years to
revising
their rating system, producing informational documents, and actively
persuading the Legislature to recognize the need for additional funds
to
assist schools with either new construction or renovations.
