Extensive cultural activities took place in "The Society of Hebrew Speakers" and in "The Society for Jewish History and Literature", headed by writer Aryeh-Leon Scheinhaus. He tried to propagate Judaism among broad circles, and for fifty years made efforts to arrange at least six lectures by well known people every winter. It is worthwhile mentioning an incident which occurred in Tilzit and Koenigsberg, when the President of the World Zionist Organization, David Wolfson, was not allowed by the heads of the local Jewish communities to give a lecture on a Zionist theme because they wished to be considered "neutral", but in Memel he gave his lecture on the same subject, arguing that if "we are neutral, we may speak on Zionism as well", this being possible thanks to A.L.Scheinhaus, the head of the Society.

just starting out with the "research" & wondering if......
my maternal great grandmother was a Scheinhous. Her name was Pauline
and and her brothers were Lipe (Lippe?), Zelig, Fanny (Feige??), and
Sarah??
Pauline died very young, when my grandma Esther (Estelle) was a little
girl. I do know that she had a slightly asymmetrical mouth (from
photos I've seen)
Pauline married Nathan Kaplowitz , and was the mother of Selma,
Bessie, Joseph, and Esther
My mom who is Esther's daughter says that Bessie was buried as a
Scheinhous and did live in Queens and died circa 1981 in Queens. I
remember Bessie, my "Aunt Betty, who BY THE WAY, married LIPPE
SCHEINHOUS, her mother's BROTHER!! They had to go to Rhode Island to
get married-they had no children (thank G-d). Her second husband was
Aaron Fishman, a furrier in NYC. We used to visit Aunt Betty all the
time, she lived on Wetherole Street in Forest Hills.
So maybe are we related to y'all????

Very educated in both Jewish and General subjects. great knowledge of ancient and modern Hebrew literature and German literature. around 1899 he and his brother Beno moved to Memel* for business in the forest area. Wile Beno Sheinhous took care of business Leon was busy with literature and bibliographies. He for a friend to many well known writers.He published his assays in Hebrew newspapers like "Hamagid, "Hazfira", Haolam"',"Hed Lita", "Netivot" and others.

He published a book of poems writen by his good friend from Radoshkovichi; the well known writer; M.Tz. Mane. He wrote a biography about Mordechai Aharon Ginsburg

**(Memel lies on the Baltic at the mouth of the River Niemen. The port city was founded by the knights of the Livonian Order in 1252 and became an important trading center during the Middle Ages when it was part of the Hanseatic League. The region later came under Swedish control and, following the Napoleonic wars under Prussia. It remained within the German Reich until the end of World War I.
Germans constituted a majority of the city's population while Lithuanians predominated in the surrounding countryside. The Treaty of Versailles severed Memel and the surrounding district (2.828 sq.km. - population 140.000) from Germany without a plebiscite or other input by the inhabitants. Lithuanian representatives to the Paris Peace Conference had asked the Allied Powers to grant them possession of Memelland but the unstable situation in the newly independent state stayed the Entente's hand. Memel was instead placed under a French administration that governed under a League of Nations mandate.

I’m searching for descendants of Scheinhaus Great Uncles and Great Aunts, who immigrated to the US from Bialystok, Poland (Russia) probably to NY city sometime between 1905 and 1915. These are my maternal Grand Father’s siblings: Abe Scheinhaus, whose wife’s name probably was Bessie; Sam Scheinhaus, whose wife’s name was Rebecca; and Ruth nee Scheinhaus, whose husband’s surname is unknown to me. imagine there might be more than one Sam Scheinhaus. As far as I know, Sam Scheinhaus was my great uncle. Although he died before I was born (I think) in 1961, my great Aunt Betty aka Bessie gave me some photos before she died in 1998.
