 Dear Eilat

Attached is a photo of an envelop carrying the address of Mr Kowarski in Vilkavishk. Also a photo of the Kowarskis.I do not know when it was taken but we found it only a few month ago in a forgotten suitcase that belonged to my father's aunt Luba Kowarski. She came to Israel in the early twenties and married Mr. Cohen.Later she divorced and married A.Katz. I forward the correspondence I had with Mr.Natapoff in Boston.I hope you can find it interesting. In this "tree" I do not find all the shubitz's I know.

Thank you again
Michael.

Dear Eilat Gordin levitan,

My name is Michael Shubitz and I live in Tel Aviv, Israel.
My origin is Lithuanian. I have watched your site with great interest.
My parents had many friends in "Ponyvez". In your page
http://www.eilatgordinlevitan.com/panevezys/pan_pages/pan_os.html you
show a photograph of Jacob Shubitz. Since I am trying to follow my
roots I would be grateful if you could tell me who this Shubitz was
how do you know the photographers name and any other detail you can
supply me with.
Shalom Michael,

Thank you for writing me. The picture is from the Yivo collection. It
was published on Octber 6, 1935 in the paper "Forward' as a snapshot
entered in the "Forward' Camera Contest.
You could find it in "1000 towns" Yivo website
the last picture for "Panevezys" using their search page
Shubitz, Jacob was the photographer.
"The Ponevezer 'shoykhet' [ritual slaughterer] teaches his American
grandson how to put on [head and arm] phylacteries. The boy's name is
Robert Slutski. "'On a visit to grandpa..."
Since it is a "snap Shot" and there are no other pictures by him- he
must have been a photographer and most likely he entered the
picture in the Forward competition in New York. ( The Ponevezer
'shoykhet' is not named and a family member would name him)I'll try to
study ancestry.com for information on the Shubitz family in New York.
I found a Jacob in the 1930 census- but I dont think it is the same
one- he worked in the mines and came in 1896 from Yugoslavia. I am
pasting all of them anyway;

Shalom Eilat.

First, I would like to thank you for your prompt reply and for
the time and effort you spent. As for my roots I have to admit that I
am
a bit obsessed to find out more than I know about my ancestors. My
parents were both from Lithuania and they both passed away when I was
young. Now with 50 I am very interested to learn and there is no one
left to tell.
My late father Mordechai Shubitz was born 1917 in a small place called
Kazloe Ruda and was named after his father that died shortly before he
was born. He grew up at his grandfather's in Wilkaviskis. He got
married
in Kaunas ,the Nazis killed his wife and he was arrested and sent to
Dachau. He came to Israel in 1946 and married my mother in 1951.He had
three brothers, one came to live here 1972- and died in 1973.Without the
web it would not be possible but I could find out some things.
1.Shubitz is a shtetl in Latvia I guess my family's origin is there. It
is very close to the Lithuanian border.
2. I was told that all the Shubitz's are one family and all are related
somehow. There is another Shubitz branch and these are the Yugoslavians
actually Slovenians. Their name is actually Subic but sounds the same.
They are not Jewish. I remember visiting Yugoslavia in the sixties with
my father. We were in a place called Bled In Slovenia. They were sure
that we were Slovenians.
3. I found a few shubitz in the world and they are for sure my
relatives. In some cases we even look alike but we could never combine
a
so called family tree. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the
20th many of the shubitz family ( brothers of my grandfather) left
Lithuania to the US South Africa, Mexico, England/ Those who stayed in
Lithuania had lost contact to those who left.I have a family tree of
all
the US branch but it did not bring me forward.

Shalom Michael,

checking Yad Vashem the yugoslavian branch was originaly Jewish ( or
at list there was also a Jewish branch0

Dear Eilat.

Only now I get to understand what a fantastic work you have doen.
Apart from doing a great Mitzwa in remembering those places and people
it also a great help for people like me. As I said my father's father
name was Mordechai and in the Lithuanian database you can find The
following:

" SHUBITZ, Mordekai ----- Chatskel -Rubin Darbenai- Shifre"

Can you please tell me.
1.What is the Lithuanian database?
2.How should this information be read? (Chatskel -Rubin Darbenai-
Shifre)

The yad vashem testimonies I know. Avreyml Shubitz was my uncle.

Thank you for your help

Michael Shubitz

You could go to the site; http://www.jewishgen.org/Litvak/searchald.htm
and put the name Shubitz . there are 6 records in Darbenai -
c the year 1885. You dont find ages but it gives names.Mordechais'
father was Chezkel and his grandfather; Rubin. Mordechais' mother was
Shifre Mordchai sister; SHUBITZ, Cire ( same parents)
there are cousins (Moshe, same grandfather, Rubin. Sheine Rive and
Teme same grandfather, Rubin)
so we know that all the Shubitz in Darbenai were related.
A Shubitz Chasia survived from Darbenai-
also from Yad vashem;Subic Welwel
Welwel Subic was born in Darbenai, Lithuania. He was a peddler and
married. Prior to WWII he lived in Darbenai, Lithuania. Welwel
perished in the Shoah. This information is based on a Page of
