#ywz-1:Yudelovitz/ YudelewitzRabbi Paysach Krohn, in his book, "Echoes of the Maggid," p. 135, tells a beautiful inspirational story from Rabbi Shabsi Yudelevitz, z.t.l. (1924-96), one of the famous magiddim of Jerusalem. It's entitled "Broken to a Point."
It's about a poor Rabbi who, a 100 years ago, had to go to Milan Italy to collect money for his family. When he got off the boat he met a wealthy man. The man was Jewish and invited the Rabbi to spend Shabbos with him.At the meal that night in the wealthy man's mansion, the Rabbi saw a beautiful closet filled with exquisite silverware, crystal bowls, flasks, and cups. Then he spotted what seemed to be way out of place in such a display-a broken glass flask, with sharp points of jagged glass jutting out. The wealthy man noticed the Rabbi's look and asked him if everything was all right. When the Rabbi excused his curiosity and asked about the broken flask, the wealthy man was more than happy to tell him the story. The man was born in Amsterdam and came to Italy at the age of eighteen to help his sick grandfather run his business. Eventually, his grandfather died and his parents wanted him to liquidate the business and return to Amsterdam. The man however was very successful in the business and decided to remain in Italy. He was doing so well that he even opened up a branch. However, he was so engrossed in the business that one-day he forgot to daven Mincha. The next day even Shacharis slipped away and one by one he stopped doing Mitzvos. Eventually he married and had children but he was leading a secular life. Although he remembered that he was Jewish, his practice of Mitzvos was almost nil.One afternoon ,he was walking in the street and saw some children playing. They all seemed to be very happy, but then he heard one of them screaming and crying bitterly. He kept repeating, "What will I tell my father? What will I tell my father? No one could console him. The wealthy man went to see what the problem was. He found out that the boy came from a poor family and that his father had saved a few precious coins throughout the winter to buy a flask of oil for Chanukah. His father warned him to come straight home with it and not to stop and play with his friends, as the flask may break. The boy didn't listen and sure enough, while he was playing, the flask broke and the oil spilled out. The man consoled the boy and bought him a bigger flask of oil than he had and he sent the now happy boy straight home with the precious oil.As the wealthy man was walking home that evening, the little boy's words rang in his ears. "What will I tell my father? What will I tell my father?" And then he thought to himself, indeed, what will I tell my Father? My Father in Heaven- after 120 years? He had drifted so far from Judaism that he forgotten that is was almost Chanukah. What excuse would he have when he stood before his Father in Heaven on that final Judgement Day?The man walked back to where the children were playing and picked up the broken pieces of glass from the flask and took it home with him. That night, to the surprise of his wife and children, he lit a Chanukah candle. The next night, he lit two, and with each passing night, he increased the amount of candles. He stared at the candles as they flickered and sparkled, remembering his parents' home back in Amsterdam. He had gone far away-maybe too far.The wealthy man concluded his story, "That Chanukah was the beginning of my return to the observance of mitzvos. Eventually, with the understanding of my wife, we began training our children the way we were brought up. Our road back had started with that broken flask and the words of that boy, 'What will I tell my father?' That is why I keep that flask as a treasured memento of what changed my life."
http://www.neveh.org/price/priceinspr1.htmlAfter the Germans evacuated Rakishok, cheders were organized in the community. The Bolsheviks came and later the Lithuanians. It was at that time that the Tarbus_ School was founded. In the beginning there were three classes. Two teachers named Goldapt and Yudelevitz from Kovno were engaged. Chanah Yackobson was also a teacher in the school.
Many Jewish students from the German Compulsory School became students in the Tarbus_ School, including myself. All of us diligently attacked our studies, just like people who have been very thirsty and suddenly get water. Our interest was captured by the beauty and enchantment of the stories in the Hebrew reader, the gymnasium exercise books, and especially the Hebrew songs. The first Hebrew song that our teacher Yudelevitz taught us was H.N. Bialik's "Al-Hatsfur". Children's concerts were often organized and performed. The first "Spectacular" performed by the children was held in the "'Arbatina."
Our school had a garden where many varieties of plants and flowers grew. We schoolchildren tended the garden, even during school vacations. We loved the school and the teachers in the school. The teachers Yudelevitz and Goldapt left Rakishok, and it was extremely difficult to find replacements for them. Rakishok looked diligently for replacements, but it was very hard to find teachers as good as Yudelevitz and Goldapt.

Not long ago a book called Me'ilo Shel Shmuel was published: it is the story of the gaon HaRav Shmuel Aharon Yudelevitz zt'l. A few weeks after it appeared a supervisor in the Chinuch Atzmai system wrote a letter in which he sharply criticized a story in the book. He claimed that this story helps our enemies and justifies the arguments against traditional chinuch. What story bothered him so?R' Shmuel studied in cheder under a melamed who was a skilled workman and took advantage of his talent to build a model of the Mishkan from cardboard and paper. When the class studied the Mishkan, he would put his creation on the table in the classroom. One day during recess everyone went outside to play except for R' Shmuel Aharon, who remained in class to review his studies. When the children returned after recess the "Mishkan" was not to be found. R' Shmuel Aharon claimed he was concentrating on his studies just then and did not see or hear anything, but the melamed was not convinced that he had not taken the model himself. He took him to the empty teacher's room, sat him down near him and told him to read aloud in Yehoshua the story of how Ochon took an object from the cheirem and was punished by sekilah. The eyes of the child darkened and he burst out crying. At that moment someone knocked on the door and told the melamed that they had found the "Mishkan" and it turned out that a certain child had slipped away with it into an empty classroom. The melamed stood up and returned with the child to the tense class. We will quote the continuation from the book:"The storm started. The melamed was totally enraged. He yelled at Shmuel Aharon: `You should be utterly ashamed. Why did you admit to something you did not do? Why did you cry? Who were you trying to fool? -- That's enough now. We do not have any spare time. Bring the "Mishkan" and let's continue the shiur.'"The melamed did not at all regret what he had done and did not ask forgiveness from Shmuel Aharon. He unrolled the colored material that represented the covering of the Mishkan, gently raising the box that was the `Aron Habris' on which were pasted two forms to represent the keruvim. `You see?' he said to the talmidim, `The Aron Habris exemplifies the Torah, since inside it were the two luchos habris. The Keruvim exemplify the rav and the talmid, their faces to each other, to teach us about the love between them.'"The story is 100% true, and R' Shmuel Aharon told it to his children endless times -- but according to that critic it should not be told. That story should be erased. No flaws exist in our educational system, no dark shadows are to be found there, and no melamdim exist who destroy nefoshos and sometimes lose their Olom Haboh. Someone who wants to warn about thorns in the vineyard, the critic felt, helps the sitra achra, provides our enemies with weapons, and must be censured.

Hashem commanded Moshe to have direct personal involvement regarding the next three mitzvos: the preparation of the oil; the designation of the Kohanim; the selection of those wise and talented people who would make the Bigdei Kehunah, Priestly vestments, and build the Mishkan. Horav Shabsai Yudelevitz, zl, 23 Kislev Rav Shabtai Yudelevitz, Yerushalmi maggid interprets this pasuk homiletically. He cites an incident in which a student of Rav Yisrael Salanter came to the famous founder of the Mussar movement, stating that he would like to go to Germany to give Mussar, lectures in character refinement and Torah observance, to the people therein the hope that he would catalyze them to repent and mend their ways. Rav Yisrael responded by saying that the student's undertaking was admirable. He said, however, "I think what you are doing is truly noble, but have you finished Russia, that you are so bent upon going to Germany?" The student thought a moment and responded, "The rebbe is right.I will first focus on Russia." Rav Yisrael said to his student, "Have you completed inspiring Poland to repent, that you are prepared to undertake Russia?" "No, rebbe, you are right. I will concentrate on Poland before I go on to distant countries."Rav Yisrael was not yet finished with his student. He turned to him and asked, "Have you addressed the lack of observance in your own community? Furthermore, what about your family? Are you so sure that all is well at home? Also, since we are getting close to home, have you introspected and confirmed that there are no areas to correct in your own personal behavior? Before you attempt to save the world, first verify that you have developed spiritually."

This fascinating tale was related by Reb Shabsi Yudelevitz zt"l: There once lived a Jew, Reuven, who suffered unbearably. He was utterly impoverished and wholly incapable of supporting his family. He and his wife were constantly ill, agonized by intolerable pain. And their sickly children suffered from malnutrition and other terrible maladies. Finally Reuven could tolerate it no longer. He decided to seek counsel with the eminent Kabbalist, Rav Shalom Sharabi, in the holy city of Jerusalem. It was a vast distance, fraught with danger, but Reuven had had enough; he placed his faith in the blessing of the renowned Tzaddik to ameliorate his unendurable fate. After a long and wearisome journey, Reuven finally arrived. Filled with hope and anxiousness, he knocked humbly on the door. The rebbetzin greeted him, and welcomed him in. The rabbi was currently busy with someone else, she informed him, and invited him to make himself comfortable in the meantime. Reuven sat down, and owing to his exhausting journey, promptly succumbed to a deep sleep. In his dream, he was wandering along a lonely path that seemed to stretch to eternity. He had no idea where the path led, but he intuitively followed its direction. Everything was perfectly still and quiet. After several minutes, he heard a commotion behind him. Turning around, he perceived a huge caravan of wagons heading his way. As they approached and passed him, he noticed that they were filled with angels, all dressed in white. There were fat angels and skinny ones; tall angels and short ones. Angels of every description. Eventually the caravan passed and all was quiet once again. Curious, he continued walking. A short while later, Reuven perceived another tumult from behind. This time the caravan was populated with angels garbed in black. Again, there were angels of all shapes and sizes. Reuven could not imagine the meaning of these caravans or their purpose. He increased his pace in an attempt to solve this mysterious riddle. Eventually, Reuven came to an enormous square. The angels were all congregating haphazardly. The noise was deafening. In the center of the square stood an immense balance. Asking one of the angels, Reuven was informed that this was the Heavenly tribunal, and that someone was about to be tried for his life accomplishments. The white angels represented the person's mitzvos (See Avos 4:11). The large, heavy angels were created through the self-sacrifice and enthusiasm the person invested in his mitzvos. The skinny angels were the result of mitzvos the man performed merely to be "yotzei" (to fulfill his minimal obligation). The black-clothed angels were products of the man's sins. This intrigued Reuven exceedingly, and he paid close attention to the proceedings.. A voice rang out: "Sin-Angels, ascend the scale!" With an tremendous ruckus, the black angels raced one another onto one side of the scale. The scaled tipped ominously in the direction of sins. The voice reverberated again: "Mitzva-Angels, ascend the scale!" With a ruckus that rivaled the first, the white angels jumped onto the other side of the scale. Slowly, the tilt of the scale began to level off. As the last angels boarded the scale, though, the balance was still predominantly leaning in favor of the sins. "Boy, this guy's in for a tough time," commented Reuven, grateful that he only had observer status. "By the way, who are they trying?" "Why, didn't you realize?" queried the surprised angel. "The one being judged... is you!!" Reuven nearly fainted. He was being judged! This was the trial of his life! And the scale was tipping in the direction of sins! What would become of him? Fearing the worst, Reuven cringed, preparing himself for the ultimate conviction. Just then, the voice thundered once more: "Angels of suffering, ascend the scale!" From out of nowhere, huge, mighty angels appeared and jumped quickly onto the scale. These were angels created by Reuven's incessant suffering in the physical world. Some flew onto the side of mitzvos, while others climbed briefly onto the side of sins, kicking off some of the sin-angels. The scale slowly shifted in the direction of mitzvos. Only a few more millimeters were needed. One more angel and Reuven would be in the clear! Sitting on the edge of his seat, Reuven searched desperately for another angel of suffering to tip the scales. But then, all the commotion ceased; no new angels were to be seen. Reuven understood the implications. He was about to be sentenced to what every human being fears most. If only he had a few more angels of suffering, he would be declared righteous. Why could he not conjure up a few more angels of suffering? Panic-stricken, Reuven emitted a blood curdling scream: "GIVE ME MORE SUFFERING!!!" And then he woke up. Everyone in the house heard Reuven's impassioned cry. They rushed into the room. Reuven lay there, in a puddle of perspiration, hyperventilating, trying to calm down. "What happened? Are you all right?" After a few minutes, Reuven rose, and walked definitively toward the door. "Where are you going? Did you not wish to speak with the rabbi?" Reuven replied, "I already received my answer... from Heaven." There's nothing quite like real life.

Three brothers came to the US, my grandfather Avrum Yitzhak (Abraham Isaac) to New York, one brother to Massachusetts (possibly Yankel or Jacob), and one brother to Los Angeles area (possibly Yane). In my investigations, and sharing with information of other researchers about their YUDELOWITZ families (and related spellings of this name), one of the surnames used in the US by descendants is LEVITAN or LEVETAN.

We also assist in the process of re-possession of property in the Czech Republic and Israel.
